Bonita GreeneBonita (Bonnie) Greene, born September 24, 1940, died on October 7, 2007.

She was born in New Rochelle, NY, and lived in New York, Rhode Island, and Maryland, before moving to Bakersfield, CA, where she lived for 35 years. She retired to Penn Valley, California in 2005.

Bonita received her Master's degree in English from California State University, Bakersfield, and went on to teach writing at the university for over 20 years. She and her husband, Alan C. Greene, raised three children.

She had a rare wit and a meticulous intelligence, which she brought to bear on everything she did and everyone who shared her life. She loved gardening, hiking and kayaking; she played tennis as though her life depended on it; she explored thoroughly the outdoors and then painted what she saw. She had a gift for caregiving, and with patience and love cared for her husband and her mother in their illnesses for many years. She died from cancer, with all of the grace, courage, and kind concern for her family and friends that marked her journey through life.

Alan Greene, her husband; and Rita and Edward Byrne; her parents died before her. She will be deeply missed by her children and their spouses: Robin and Gerry Jaworski, Alison Greene, and Scott and Molly Greene. She was a beloved grandmother, aunt, sister, cousin, and a dear friend to many. A memorial walk will take place along the Yuba River in Penn Valley on November 3; and a small service for the family will be held in Annisquam, MA at the end of November.
