Jared Says for March 2001

Be careful about throwing away something that you perceive as having little or no value. This is especially true when you come across a large volume of paper items.

I had the recent good fortune to obtain a large batch of paper items pertaining to a tool manufacturer in RI during the 1800s'.

Filtering out the obvious material such as receipts and graphics from manufactures and shippers left me with a large amount of other material that I assumed was of little or no value.

How wrong I was! After a little research I learned that collectors/dealers have a wider range of interests than I thought. Specific areas I learned about included:

Manufacturing companies
Manufacturing pertaining to a particular state or locale (i.e.Caribbean)
Illustrated art via graphics or vignettes on letterheads or bills
Bank checks
Revenue stamps
Transportation or shipping invoices
Handwriting or script (the lost art of penmanship)
Old letters
Accounting details or ledgers

It is amazing is the level of expertise and knowledge that exists. I would like to thank all that assisted me.

Take heart spring is just around the corner and picking should get better.

Have a good month!

    Jared
