Jared Says for March
2002
Frank Crosetti died a couple
of weeks ago. Hard to believe the man was 91. I can still picture
him aside the third base coaches box at the old, and the best,
Yankee Stadium. Before coaching he was a Yankee shortstop and
he spent his whole baseball career as a Yankee.
Crosetti, and the New York teams of Yankees, Giants, and Dodgers
were part of my childhood either in person or on TV..Yankees
and Giants Channel 11(WPIX), and the Dodgers and Happy Felton
on Channel 9 (WOR). All 3 were sponsored by beer companies and
in those days the announcers guzzled a pilser glass of beer
every couple of innings. Mel Allen was something in those extra
innings games.
Here are some web sites that talk about Frank Crosetti:
Nothing beat going to the ballpark. Unfortunately, I never
made it to Ebbets Field, but I saw those great Giant/ Dodger
games in the Polo Grounds. Mecca was Yankee Stadium, overpowering
the others except for the Polo Grounds centerfield. Our neighbor
was a postman and his friends worked the turnstiles at the
Stadium. He would fill the car with kids and after the first
inning we would all sneak in. My father did not like baseball,
but that did not hold my brother and me back. We used to get
Father's Day tickets for the 3 of us and that forced him to
go. It was always a doubleheader, a hot, hot day and it seems
like Vic Raschi and Allie Reynolds were always the pitchers.
Great memories.
Next month I will make my annual baseball predictions.
Until the I hope your picking will be better than mine.
Until Next Time,
Good Picking!
