Jared Says for September 2002

Jared Holds a signed baseballI still enjoy doing yard sales and flea markets for the personal contacts. In the past I wrote of my "how to" experiences on running a successful yard sale. This month I would like to describe the different types of people who show up at these sales.

The first, and best, are the early birds. They know exactly what they want and it does your heart good to see them put together a large pile. Although they may not take every item it still means a substantial sale. For this reason I am surprised that people turn away these people, including me, as they end up being the largest percentage buyers for the day.

The others can be described as:

  • "Hands In Pocket" They pretend to have an interest in your items, but they never buy anything.
  • "Touch Everything" They pick up almost everything, but if they buy one item you are lucky.
  • "Hi Neighbor" They just want to stand around and chew the fat.
  • "The Jock" The biker rider or runner who takes a break in your yard or table. Lucky to have $1 in their pocket.
  • "I Had One Like That" or "What Is Mine Worth?" They think you are a price guide and want the value of an item usually very common.
  • "Do You Have?" Although this can lead to additional sales what they want is usually very unique, expensive item that they would not pay a fair price for.
  • "I Will Give You "X" For This Item" Price so low that it is hard not to laugh at them.

Thankfully, the majority of people are fun and rewarding to deal with.

Enjoy the beginning of the fall season and good picking.

                          -Jared
