I
just finished reading a very good book, SEABISCUIT
by Laura Hillenbrand. It combined two interests of mine:
sports and the 1930s.
Seabiscuit become a celebrity in his own right and Ms. Hillenbrand
does an excellent job of interweaving the lives and talents
of the horse, and the owner, trainer and jockey. It also gives
a good insight into the inner workings of race tracks and training
and racing horses.
Public television on its AMERICAN EXPERIENCE program in April
will be devoted to Seabiscuit and a movie is scheduled to be
released in July 2003.
Horse racing whether harness or "flat" has a collectible
group all its own. I have found that sports collectors group
their interests around baseball and football and hockey and
basketball while horse racing collectors are manly interested
in that one topic. They seem to go beyond the big races. Kentucky
Derby, Preakness, etc. to collect programs at different tracks,
pictures, autographs and apparel. Unfortunately, I have not
uncovered much material, but the subject still appeals to me.
This is not the only book Laura Hillenbrand has written on
Seabiscuit, there is also Seabiscuit:
An American Legend
Next month I will get into baseball with my annual predictions.
I am glad that I do not bet on my picks.
Good picking,
Jared
